在中国书法史上,金代的书法成就不如宋代显赫,北宋四家——尤其是苏东坡的行书影响北宋,笼罩南宋及金人。金代赵秉文是受苏、米、蔡尤其是苏东坡诗书及其学问影响较深而卓然独立于金代末叶的文坛领袖、书法大家。刘祁《归潜志》卷一云:『公幼年,诗与书皆法子端,后更学太白、东坡,字兼古今诸家学,及晚年,书大进』。又云:『赵闲闲平日字画工夫最深,诗其次,又其次散文也。尝语余曰:「今日后进中,作文者颇能有三二人,至吟诗者绝少,字画亦无也。」以是知公所长。』元好问《跋过朝名公书》云:『字画则有魏晋以来风调,而草书尤惊绝,殆天机所到,非学能至』(《元好问全集》)。其诗有『酒酣苍茫瞰无际,块视五岳芥九州』(《游华山寄元裕之》)的佳句,豪放气势与李白、东坡相通,亦与其书法相通。
