In the place where most people see history, Cai Jianhua, a 32-year-old city planning designer (all Chinese people use transliteration below) has set his sights on the future. Cai gazes at the collapsed courtyard from his office near Tiananmen Square in the center of Beijing, and glass and steel-filled buildings emerge in his mind. Cai’s task is to design “International Media Avenue” - a huge media center built specifically for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Although the project is only one of the thousands of projects under construction, it is the largest project in Beijing’s historic center. Tsai hopes that it will become a testament to China’s lofty ambitions. He said: “We want to create a world-class feeling.” China’s leadership is of course ideal and ambitious.
