狱中囚犯HIV感染危险首推静脉吸毒。药瘾人群中很大一部分为毒贩及吸毒的囚犯,估计狱中囚犯中约30％为药物依赖者。药物依赖(药瘾)者构成了西方工业化国家监狱中犯人的最大群体。 狱中不良环境导致药物多而注射器少,狱中囚犯的HIV感染率与药瘾密切相关,该狱中调查方式如再加上其HB及HC的流行则问题显得更为严重,简直成了监狱中特有的疾病,其在狱中的发病率比正常人群要高出100～200倍。迄今尚无合适的办法对狱中的吸毒问题予以根除。
