This article tries to discuss the identity of Maltese, the hero in the novel “Martello” by Austrian writer Rilke. Through the experience of Maltese in the big cities, this paper analyzes the emergence and the manifestation of identity crisis in the big cities and explores the mutual constructions of memories and reality through the tracing back of childhood experiences. When the protagonist attempts to resist fear through writing, he fails to seek the power of abstract love. It can also be regarded as the moment when the people experienced the language crisis at the turn of the century of 1900, and the author rebuilds the spiritual home with love and faith The possibility of thinking.
