In Japan, the petroleum industry began with the increase in demand of kerosene used for lamp oil after the Meiji Restoration of 1868.This paper deals with the development of the technology used for drilling oil wells in Japan from 1868 to the 1930s.In the mean time, the oil wells were dug by hand, the traditional“Kazusa-bori”method,the cable tool system and the hydraulic rotary system introduced from the U.S.A.The annual amount of crude oil increased gradually to about five hundred thousand kiloliters in 1915 and remained nearly constant.Drilling technology was developing, repeating a pattern. It was composed of the introduction of technology and the invitation of engineers from the U.S.A.and the manufacture of equipment by imitation.“Kazusa-bori”method supported a transition period from manual work to machine operation. Domestic production of steel pipes, the most important parts, was realized in the 1930s falling behind other parts.
