A programmable gain amplifier (PGA) for a 5 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) based on a 0.18μm CMOS process is presented. The PGA uses a hierarchy of optional amplifier system architecture, the core circuit consists of cross-coupled cascode amplifier and current feedback amplifier. In order to eliminate the influence of the process angle deviation on the gain accuracy, a mechanism of fine adjustment of gain is added in the design. Post-simulation results show that the PGA voltage gain can vary from 0 dB to 41 dB in 1-dB steps, the voltage swing on the double-ended output is 1 Vp-p and -3 dB bandwidth greater than 10 MHz and less than 21.1 mW static power consumption.
