I. INTRODUCTION The reference electrode is an important part of the applied current cathodic protection system for underground metal pipes and vessels. It is a comparative electrode for measuring and controlling the potential of metals in soil media. In the soil medium commonly used copper - copper sulfate (liquid) electrode as the reference electrode, which has the advantages of simple structure, easy manufacture and low resistance. However, the electrode has a fatal drawback, namely, short service life, especially in sand areas where the water retention is poor, the electrode solution is seeped out within a week and a new copper sulfate solution needs to be replaced or added. As a result of the loss of solution in the electrode, the potentiostat stops working, affecting the effect of cathodic protection and shortening the service life of the buried metal components, resulting in some economic loss.
