Some topics will never be out of date. Although many new technologies have become less prevalent, those advocates always tire of trying to regain their glories. The global hierarchical directory service follows this rule, and it has been raised repeatedly in recent years as a popular topic. But this time I had a weirdly hallucinatory feeling about it. In the early nineties, all our discussions centered on the introduction of NDS around X.500 and Novell. And we have not forgotten yet, the sensation that caused Banyan to use the StreetTalk directory, which made the directory a hot topic in the 1980s. But the momentum created by the catalog subsided as customers were busy with other new technologies. Slowly, managers are also awake to the realization that while everyone is talking about metadirectory and LDAP, there are actually many of the most basic problems that prevent the directory from growing and getting worse. This is very similar to the clustering technology. Because, over the years, operating systems that use clustering technology can only provide support for failed backups (and in rare cases, computational applications). So if people do not spend too much time, they lose their enthusiasm for clustering solutions. This is not to say that IS’s manager is right
