御咏歌是一种将佛教内容的歌词配上曲调,用近似民谣的润腔作装饰的咏唱形式,主要唱于居士巡礼朝圣及佛教式葬礼之时。17世纪初已作为巡礼歌广泛流传,歌词的成立更可追溯至12世纪。1920年以后,与佛教教团关系密切的御咏歌诸流派相继成立并传承至今。本研究选择的密严流,是真言宗智山派教团的御咏歌,历史较长,创立之初就受教团统合,可以设想作为各教团传教用御咏歌,都以密严流成立为契机而确立。
