Objective To investigate the relationship between body mass index (PMI) and hypertension in pilots and the health assessment of hypertensive pilots after World Health Organization (WHO) established a new standard of hypertension. Methods The height, weight and blood pressure of 1,000 pilots were measured. The relationship between body mass index and blood pressure, age and blood pressure and the positive rate of hypertension were compared between the two groups. By body mass index greater than, equal to 26 and less than 26 divided into overweight and non-overweight group. Results A total of 65 patients with elevated blood pressure were detected, the positive rate was 6.5%. The average body mass index was 24.02 ± 2.31, the highest 34.82, the lowest 17.63. Among 65 hypertensive patients, the positive rate of hypertension in overweight group was 16.28% (35/215), the positive rate of non - overweight group was 3.82% (30/785), the difference was significant (χ ~ 2 = 43.0962, P <0.01). Conclusion The positive rate of hypertension in pilots increases with age, and the positive rate of hypertension in overweight people is higher than that in non-overweight people.
