Objective To observe the changes of serum IL-6, TNF-α levels, NK cell activity and lymphocyte subsets in different types of pituitary adenomas. Methods According to pituitary hormone levels, 32 patients with pituitary adenomas were divided into two groups: nonsecreting pituitary adenomas and secretory pituitary adenomas. Serum IL-6 and TNF-α levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, NK cell activity was measured by 3H-TdR incorporation, and lymphocyte subpopulations were profiled by APAAP bridging enzyme method. Results The serum levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in all types of pituitary adenomas had no significant changes. The proportion of CD3+ and CD4+ subpopulations in prolactin-secreting adenomas was significantly lower than that in normal controls (P<0.05). The activity of NK cells in patients with ACTH-secreting adenomas was decreased, and T4 cell subsets were decreased. There was no significant abnormality in cellular immune function in patients with nonsecreting adenomas. Conclusion Endocrine abnormalities in patients with pituitary adenoma can interfere with its cellular immune function.
