Shikonin (1), isolated from Lithospermum erythraea, is an important naphthoquinone pigment and has been found to have a wide range of biological activities. Studies in recent years have demonstrated that metabolites obtained after incubation with human intestinal bacteria are more resistant to multiple human tumor cell lines than 1. This article reports that human intestinal bacteria can convert 1 to various metabolites, and at least 10 have been identified.
