Objective To explore the effect of long-term exposure to low doses of radiation on serum testosterone levels in radiation workers and to provide evidence for establishing radiation protection measures and to accumulate data for radiation effects and risk assessment. Methods Serum testosterone levels were measured in 1 664 male X-ray workers and industrial inspectors in Nanjing using testosterone assay kit (chemiluminescence). Results Among 1 664 male subjects, the testosterone levels were lower than normal in 123 cases and the detection rate was 7.39%. The detection rate of testosterone decreased significantly with age and seniority (P <0.01, P <0.05). There was no significant difference in serum testosterone levels between medical X-ray workers and industrial testing workers. Conclusion Long-term exposure to small doses of radiation has some effect on serum testosterone levels in workers.
