元代太湖流域的水利治理相对达到了新的高度。政府主持的工程规模较大,如由水利学家任仁发负责的吴淞江治理等。在兴修较大工程同时,认识到综合治理的重要性并进行圩田的治理。大运河沟通南北,极其重要。元代对大运河进行了截弯取直,使河道较隋代缩短了几百公里,运输能力大为加强。太湖流域的运河修治主要围绕旧有江南运河河道进行浚治,并开凿了里运河,沟通清江至临清。海塘的修建是太湖流域水利治理的又一项重要内容。元代创立了木柜石囤法,使饱受海潮侵袭的盐官等地建立起了稳固的石塘。元代的太湖流域水利治理相比明清两代虽没有国家大规模强势参与,治理的频率不那么高,但还是取得了很好的效应,达到了预期的目的,为经济发展创造了良好的基础。

However, it achieved good effect and achieved the expected purpose, creating a sound basis.
