What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you? It probably involved a hospital, am I right? It could be something that happened to you directly, or something that happened to a loved one, thus hurting you by proxy. I’m sure we’ve all spent our fair share of time in the hospital, and that time spent was far from enjoyable. But it could always be worse, couldn’t it? What if the hospital staff didn’t care about their patients? What if they were more worried about making their tee times than saving lives and comforting concerned family members? So, as terrible as it is being in a hospital, at least there are people out there, like the ones in this month’s featured articles, who risk their own well being for that of their patients.
In our first feature, writer Mohammed Omer follows Ibrahim Abuelkas, a Gaza Paramedic Haunted by Daily Carnage, as we see the harrowing stories of families in Gaza torn asunder by Israeli missiles, through the eyes of this brave paramedic just hoping to return to his own family’s arms after a nightmarish 24-hour shift. Next, in The Blessing, Mary Ellen Holbrook, a registered nurse, learns to truly appreciate the quality of hospital care, after she finds herself on the other side of the profession, as an anxious daughter worried about her stroke-stricken mother. And Confessions of a Doctor is a cautionary tale for those considering a future in medicine. Because in an effort to go above and beyond to help her patients, Vera Tarman realizes she has inadverently hurt them by prolonging their recovery and enabling them to continue their unhealthy habits.
So count your blessings and your lucky stars, and thank whatever higher power you may or may not believe in, because without the efforts of such selfless individuals, here to help in whatever way they can, we would all be considerably less fortunate.
