This article studies digital methods and techniques for 1D and 2D signal processing. Described in detail the spectral estimation, digital filtering and data compression operations. It is pointed out that digital signal processing operations can be implemented using standard computers (ie, software) or specialized digital processors (ie, hardware). The use of recently developed microprocessors and charge coupled devices is also discussed. As a typical example, some of the digital processors that implement digital filtering and spectral estimation and their applications in the processing of signals (audio, electrocardiogram) and images (from Earth resources satellites) are described in detail.
