Composite resin materials have been used in dentistry for more than 20 years. Such materials can be used for both front teeth and back teeth. Nowadays, there are many repairing materials specially developed for the posterior teeth of the composite resin and satisfactory clinical results have been obtained. Many disadvantages of silver amalgam can be overcome by the composite resin. Therefore, posterior teeth composite resin repair has been accepted by more and more patients and dentists. However, direct filling composite resin materials is still considered to have many limitations. Such as the edge defects, facial wear, tip deformity and postoperative pulp sensitivity. Therefore, in recent years, a new technology for composite resin has been developed - indirect composite resin inlays and inlays repair technology. Its clinical application to some extent overcomes the limitations of the direct fill resin described above. Composite inlays or onlays are a type of prosthesis that is cemented as a solid in a prefabricated cavity. The solid prosthesis is made of a composite resin material by an indirect method, and finally is fixed in the mouth again. This article summarizes recent information on indirect inlays and onlays, including its clinical application, advantages and disadvantages, and problems faced.
