To evaluate the genetic structure of M. tuberculosis that is currently circulating in Japan, phylogenetics studies of 237 Beijing family isolates from Japanese patients with tuberculosis were performed. Unlike previous reports from other countries, ancient subtype strains are the major Japanese strains. Cluster analysis was based on the JATA-VNTR (a variable number of randomized Japanese antituberculosis repeats) that described the unique VNTR method of Japanese Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains and revealed that among modern subtype strains There is no geographical origin of the difference, with a high degree of similarity. The JATA-VNTR method may be of value in phylogenetic studies in flora that often isolate ancient subtype strains.
