明代杰出的人物画家陈洪绶(1598—1652)生当乱世,清兵陷绍兴时,他避乱山中,剃发披缁,曾自云:“岂能为僧,借僧活命而已”。不料,到顺治九年,竟“趺坐床箦,喃喃吟佛号而卒”,成了一位情缘未绝、忧心如焚而又能自由坐化的“高僧”,享年五十五岁。关于他的死,虽然蹊跷,但向来没有人怀疑过:这是否属正常死亡?前几年,诗人陈朗从我国已故著名历史学家邓之诚先生所编《清诗纪事初编》中,看到丁耀亢悼念陈洪绶的一首七律,和邓之诚先生的按语,发现陈洪绶因遭“黄祖之祸”“以不良死”的新说。于是录出,嘱我考证。经查证,我的结论是,
