地壳中的环状构造早已被查明,但在将卫片用于地质学之前并未对它引起特别的重视。地表许多地质体和结构单元都明显地呈圆或椭圆形。在阿尔丹和乌克兰,花岗—片麻岩穹窿呈圆形。在年青的地槽区侵入岩体、活火山和死火山机构、被深深侵蚀的古火山根部也都呈圆形。与地壳相对比较轻的岩石(盐株和盐丘,花岗岩体、饱气的泥等等)漂浮有关的反重力成因的圆和椭圆构造是很多的。经查明地表上有不少因陨星降落和宇宙物体爆炸而造成的圆形撞击坑。地表上许多凹地,如滨里海凹地及特兰西瓦尼亚凹地,也具浑圆形态。
