Compared with the classical tragedy, the modern tragedy has changed in its content and characteristics. Classical tragedy is often written conflict between man and God, and modern tragedy is written in the past and the character of the “ownership” of the conflict. The protagonists of the tragedy are no longer heroes, but ordinary people who make unrelenting efforts to realize their personal ideals. It is through the mouth of the protagonist that Woolf’s novels reveal the problems discussed by people who are pensive in history. Therefore, from the point of view of the contents and characteristics of the novel, Woolf’s novels have the modern tragedy consciousness.
