A drop fell on the apple tree,
Another on the roof;
A half a dozen kissed the eaves[屋檐],
And made the gables[山形墙] laugh.
A few went out to help the brook[小溪],
That went to help the sea.
Myself conjectured[猜想], Were they pearls,
What necklaces could be!
The dust replaced in hoisted[升起] roads,
The birds jocoser注 sung;
The sunshine threw his hat away,
The orchards[果园] spangles[小而亮的东西] hung.
The breezes[微风] brought dejected[沮丧的] lutes[鲁特琴],
And bathed them in the glee[欢乐];
The East put out a single flag,
And signed the fete[盛大庆祝会] away.
一滴落到苹果树,
又一滴落到屋顶;
半打亲吻了屋檐,
让山墙眉开眼笑。
几滴出去帮助小溪,
小溪又去帮助大海。
我暗自忖度,它们若是珍珠,
该可以做成怎样的项链啊!
路面浮升,灰尘被换去,
鸟儿在诙谐地啼唱;
阳光把帽子也抛掉,
果园缀满了亮片,熠熠闪光。
微风捎来哀婉的鲁特琴声,
又将其在喜悦中濯洗;
东方亮出了一面单旗,
示意这场盛会的结束。
本诗出自美国传奇女诗人艾米莉·狄金森(1830—1886)之手,描写的是夏日骤雨将尘埃、水珠和植物通通带走,让雨水重新汇入大海的景象。
狄金森从25岁开始弃绝社交,闭门不出,在孤独中埋头写诗三十年,留下诗稿一千七百余首,但基本上都是在她死后才出版的。狄金森的诗主要以自然、生命、信仰、友谊、爱情为题材,诗风凝练婉约、意向清新,思想深沉、凝聚力强,常置格律乃至语法于不顾。
