“Daily necessities” is Walker’s discussion of black ethnic identity and self-identity as an example. By analyzing the development of accompanying stories in the novel, this article presents three sets of binary opposition: the opposition between estrangement and estrangement; the opposition between white values and black values; and the opposition between changing and conservative. While analyzing the conflicts and contradictions between the mother and daughter and the complexities and contradictions in the heart of the characters, it deeply explores Walker’s exploration and profound cognition of the survival path and destiny of the black people.
