中国绘画源远流长自成体系,历代名家辈出,而石涛就是在明末清初出现的一位标举创新的画家。在当时的摹古之风盛行之时,石涛力求标举自我,在师古人的文化氛围中以对师造化的强调。并据此提出了一系列相关的艺术主张。石涛为表达认识的途径,参照气象万千的大自然和内容丰富的社会生活创造了独具特色的个人风格,为当时中国画坛注入了新鲜血液。他的艺术创新精神促进了清初中期扬州八怪的创新,并且对现代的吴昌硕、齐白石、张大千、傅抱石等也产生了深刻影响。同时,对当今中国画的发展亦具有积极的现实意义。

Shi Tao to express their understanding of ways, with reference to the meteorological nature and rich content of social life to create a unique personal style, at the time of Chinese painting has injected new blood. His creative spirit of art promoted the innovation of Yangzhou in the middle of the first half of the Qing dynasty and also had a profound impact on modern Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian and Fu Baoshi. At the same time, it also has positive and practical significance for the development of contemporary Chinese painting.
