王丹在金石书画创作方面的艺龄虽只有十余年,但基本上却可以分作两个时期——八五年之前,他的风格基本上是继承了并局限在北朝碑刻体系之内的,因而王丹的风格是雄浑的、拙朴的、宽博的,体近《郑文公碑》,其时他的创作亦以大件作品为多;八五年浙江美术学院进修之后,他的眼界大为开阔,同时其作品风格中本来单纯的雄浑、拙朴,又渗入了只属于南方才明显突出的娟秀的体势和潇洒的风采,而且又并不失北魏书风的宽博、大度。“相反相成”,具有奇逸洒落的品味。
