石河子棉区,位于天山北麓、准噶尔盆地南缘。纯属大陆性气候,早期温变低,生长季节短。每年从4月25日到9月25日,约有150天的时间为无霜期。正常年份霜前花只有70—80％,植棉30多年来,平均亩产皮棉只有64.98斤,丰年单产112.6斤,长期徘徊在60—90斤之间。 1980年,石河子企(市)农科所引进透明塑料薄膜地面覆盖技术栽培棉花,在一块前作为玉米,土壤含有机质5％未经秋耕冬灌,没有施底肥的地上获得亩产皮棉216.8斤的好收成,比裸地增产68.8％;霜前花高达90.3％,比裸地多35.43％;最高的折算单产271.5斤,比裸地增产111.5％。这一结果显示出塑料薄膜地面覆盖植棉有很大的增产潜力和良好前景。
