This article is a preface to the Finnish version of Bernstein’s Anthology of Poetry. The author briefly introduces his personal contacts with Bernstein, a linguistic American poet, and his vast field of new poetry. The author believes that Bernstein’s poetry is unique and unruly, and is a rebellion against the traditional concept of poetry. The most effective way to appreciate Bernstein’s poem is to regard his poem as an intervention in the field of poetry because his poem has always been the reaction to an idealized paradigm of poetry. Bernstein’s poetry is directly related to the poems of Whitman and Kingsburg, but his poems have Bernstein’s special rhythm, which contains a trace of sadness that is always controlled by reason. His recent poetry is also filled with a transcendent utopian feeling.
