由于我国长期执行以钢为纲的方针，钢铁工业的曲折发展过程是整个工业发展的缩影。透过对钢铁工业发展的剖析，可以看清我国改革开放前执行的传统计划经济模式的活力和弊端，可以说明由传统计划经济模式向社会主义市场经济模式转变的必要性和艰巨性。透过对钢铁工业发展的剖析还可以看清我国工业化和现代化的可喜成绩与漫长征途。我国钢铁工业长期采用扩大外延方式发展，不断铺新摊子。这一方针在其他工业中有不同程度的反映。到了八十年代和九十年代也不例外。为此，努力提高内在素质，缩短与发达国家的技术与管理差距，达到规模经济，是今后钢铁工业发展的方向。
