On June 28, the coalition forces stationed in Iraq secretly held a small ceremony in Baghdad. The U.S. Supreme Chief of Civil Administration Bremer submitted a legal instrument that symbolizes Iraq’s sovereignty to the Iraqi interim government. It marks the 14-month occupation of Iraq. The state officially ends in a legal sense. The power handover ceremony was held two days earlier than originally planned. The scale was very small, it was heavily guarded and the duration was very short. Only a few reporters were present. The long-awaited handover of power that attracted worldwide attention has come to an end. However, this US-led war on Iraq may be difficult to conclude with this. We have selected chapters from two articles, the British “The Economist” and the “New York Times” of the United States. We will give a brief and concise introduction to all aspects of this important event in the transfer of power.
