This article uses the survey data of China (Guangdong) family dynamics in 2010 to investigate the relationship between mandarin skills and employment in Guangdong Province. Based on the potential endogenous issues, the results of this study show that mandarin skills have a significant impact on employment, and there is a significant heterogeneity in this effect. In particular, mandarin skills can significantly improve men’s employment status, but the promotion of female employment is not obvious. Putonghua skills have a significant impact on the employment status of individuals in the mining, manufacturing and construction industries as well as in trade services and communications. Further, judging from the level of education, mandarin skills have a significant impact on employment among the educated groups below high school, and the relationship between undergraduate and undergraduate groups is not significant.
