The topics for this volume are physics and physics. Although the volume of each volume in this series is substantial, we think the volume is too broad and the one book is too big to accommodate. This volume deals with physics; the next book describes the practical application of these sciences; the third, in the next section, deals with the history of civil engineering and the history of hydraulic engineering, as well as the nautical science and technology. Readers familiar with the first few volumes have long seen Dr. Needham on China
