In intercultural communication,those who are learning English recognize that English learning involves more than just acquiring the sounds,the grammar,and the new vocabulary.It requires as well acquiring the ability of using English appropriately,which is defined by linguists as pragmatic competence.This paper shows the importance of pragmatic competence in intercultural communication,discusses how to design English teaching to train students’ pragmatic competence and illustrate how to teach the course.
