In a watershed where the Soil Conservation Research Program (CRP) was implemented in the northern Mississippi, USA, artificial simulated rainfall tests were conducted to determine the effects of tillage practices on soil potential erosion and soil quality. Statistics show that soil loss in CRP watersheds that have not been disturbed is the smallest, while soil loss in CRP watersheds that have been cultivated for 9 months is almost equal to that in CRP watersheds that have been cultivated for several years. Tillage and winter recreation can lead to the decomposition of biological nutrients leading to the degradation of soil quality. Therefore, once the CRP basin has been tillaged and the crop is not growing seasonally, the benefits of soil and water conservation and soil quality of the CRP will decrease rapidly.
