为了诱变育种,进一步开展了器官组织培养法的研究。成熟的胚能否在培养基上继续生长,看来取决于胚轴上子叶组织的多少。培养不带子叶的成熟胚轴时,只有体积增长,没有伸长生长。不成熟的胚继续生长所需的蔗糖浓度一般比成熟的胚所需的高。不到1毫米长的极幼小的胚,必须和一块胚乳组织一起培养才能生长。在培养基上培养子叶外植体的断片时可产生大量根系。有些在适当培养基上培养的外植体中观察到不定胚(每个胚具有一对子叶)。

Adventitious embryos (a pair of cotyledons per embryo) are observed in some explants cultured on appropriate media.
