The good adhesion between the tire rubber and the reinforced polymer cords is crucial to the overall performance and safety of the tire. The polymer cords are usually treated with a resorcinol formaldehyde latex (RFL) coating to achieve the desired adhesion. In order to make the cord surface compatible with the RFL coating, it is often used with an epoxy coating. This article provides an overview of these chemical treatments and describes the latest developments in this area. Environmental issues and toxicological shortcomings become the driving force for finding suitable alternative technologies, for which it is discussed whether RFL processing can be replaced or not. Is such an alternative technology applicable? Plasma treatment on cord surfaces is the most promising in this area One of the options.
