Trichosantheskirilowii is used for antipyretic, antitussive, anti-diabetic and detoxification in oriental medicine. However, no hypoglycemic components have been reported. The authors found that the non-permeation sites of water extracts of G. mirabilis were hypoglycemic and the five glycans-trichosan A, B, C, D and E were further separated. Trichosan A is effective against alloxan-induced hyperglycemic mice. The crude drugs were extracted with methanol, methanol-water (1:1) and water at room temperature, and the extraction time was 1 day.
