The 1989 review of the UCLA Neuropsychiatry Hospital was conducted under the guidance of the Joint Health Assessment Committee (JCAHO) for the first time using the JCAHO 1989 edition of the “Hospital Review Manual”. The author detailedly calculated the cost of the hospital’s preparation and implementation of the survey. Based on the records, the total expenditure for the entire survey was estimated to be $326,784. This cost accounted for about 1% of the hospital’s 1989 operating budget, far exceeding the estimated amount of JCAHO review fees previously reported.
