1.1 INTRODUCTION Since the publication of Foreign Language Teaching (Brumfit, 1977), there has been a growing interest and encouraging progress in the theoretical development of the law of reading in foreign languages for several years. This trend is reflected in the emergence of authoritative writings that include three rather compelling collections (Mackay, Barkman and Jordan, 1979; Anderson and Urquhart, 1984a; Carrell, Devine and Eskey, 1988) and Foreign Language Reading Magazine (St. Mark and St. John’s College, Plymouth).
