Affordable magnetic and infrared sensors provide controllers with a new aids to track aircraft and vehicles on the ground, helping to prevent ground-level collision. Honeywell’s Technology Center recently developed a dual infrared / magnetic sensor under the FAA contract. With the addition of sensors to the lighting poles on taxiways and runway edges, hundreds of small short-range passive systems were installed at the airport. The resulting information gives accurate data on the location of aircraft and vehicles on the airport and can be used to automate ground traffic control at airports equipped with ground-based radar (eg ASDE-3). Low cost is the key user acceptance of this dual sensor and is useful for smaller airports that are unable to install ground surveillance radios. A similar infrared sensor costs less than $ 30. Low-cost magnetic sensors are currently in the process of batch production
