Improved grain yield and lodging resistance are the main goals of the maize breeding program. 130 responses from the US public and private corn breeders survey showed that increasing grain yield, stem strength and root strength are the most important traits of choice in maize inbred line breeding programs (Bauman, 1981). Recently, Hunter et al. (1983) listed three factors that are involved in the contradiction between grain yield and lodging: plant architecture, disease and source-sink balance. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the effect of three grain storage levels on the vertical tensile properties and stem crushing strength of 14 maize roots.
