Australian historians have made a number of accounts of Australian history that describe or embrace or challenge the myths of national identity and ethnic construction. During the two world wars, Ernest Scott focused on the concept of “free gift” to construct the basic framework of the origins and characteristics of the Australian nation. In the first half of the 20th century, Australian historians repeatedly adopted the theme of “peer-to-peer narration” to explore the fellowship of companions, the sacrifice of Bai’ao and the war, and the emergence of a unique Australian nationalism. Since then, the historical narratives of constructing a homogeneous nation have been challenged, and various amendments have fiercely debated each other on such issues as ethnic identity, race and gender. After the 1990s, new disagreements and controversies broke out around the history of whites and indigenous Australians. Australia’s national narratives were increasingly challenged.
