Mainstream linguistics of the 20th century, such as structuralist linguistics and generative linguistics, advocated the separation of vocabulary and grammar, grammar is abstract syntax rules, and vocabulary is an irregular form of the list, but the grammar appendix. However, some current theoretical linguists hold different opinions about this. They think that vocabulary is at the core of language and grammar is merely an appendix of vocabulary. However, cognitive linguists and corpus linguists argue that the distinction between lists and rules is a fallacy, and that vocabulary and grammar in fact constitute a continuum that is hard to separate. In this paper, we start from “the dispute between the list and the rules”, and sort out the explanation of the relationship between vocabulary and grammar by linguistic theories. At the same time, this article also takes affixes in English as an example, taking the overall perspective of vocabulary and grammar as the continuum, examining the interface of vocabulary and grammar in order to better understand each other’s internal relations.
