The original purpose of carving the statue of the President on Mount Rushmore in 1926 was to develop South Dakota tourism. When completed 15 years later, it has become a landmark symbol of American resolve and skill. Under the supervision of genius sculptor Geron Borglum, some 400 workers have demolished and drilled 410,000 tons of granite from the top of the hill. But Borglum’s talent is not limited to the arts, he also shows extraordinary talent in project advocacy and marketing. William Bullock, then South Dakota’s governor, is no stranger to these aspects of the artist during the sculpture of the President of Mount Rushmore.
