Japan’s share in the world semiconductor market will drop from the current 33% to 25% by the year 2000 due to the increasingly fierce global competition and the current downturn in the market. In spite of this, Japan will maintain its top position in the world semiconductor market and continue to invest more in process research and development. One of the reasons Japan’s market share is declining in the coming years is the rise of semiconductor manufacturing in Southeast Asia.
