Doctors in the United States say smoking mothers can affect the rate of their child’s lung development and make them more susceptible to lung and respiratory diseases. The Massachusetts Institute of Physicians studied 1,100 children aged 5 to 9 years whose mothers either smoked or did not smoke. For five consecutive years, the doctor tests once a year to observe the child’s lung development rate, measured the child’s lung capacity per second. The results showed that those smoking mothers had hypoplasia of the lungs, which was 7% worse than those born to non-smoking mothers.
