The Massachusetts Institute of Physicians studied 1,100 children aged 5 to 9 years whose mothers either smoked or did not smoke. For five consecutive years, the doctor tests once a year to observe the child’s lung development rate, measured the child’s lung capacity per second. The results showed that those smoking mothers had hypoplasia of the lungs, which was 7% worse than those born to non-smoking mothers.
