清末,袁世凯为了取宠于慈禧太后,于1902年从德国进口了一辆杜尔依汽车公司制造(约1896年造)的汽车送给慈禧。这是我国有史以来出现的第一辆汽车。该车车身为木质敞开式,带顶篷双排座,四马力,外形保留着18世纪欧洲马车的痕迹。此事被宫内大臣知晓后,竟视汽车为“邪物”,更怕慈禧坐后“中邪”,于是纷纷奏章道:“伏念中国自尧舜以来,历朝王帝,未闻有轻以万乘之尊,托诸于彼风驰电掣之汽车者……”。慈禧不听,偏要坐车取乐。可司机的位置在她之前,冒犯了她的尊严。她下令司机跪着开车,因实在无法驾驶,只好弃之,成为宫中废物。这辆车现作为历史文物保存在颐和园内。
At the end of the Qing Dynasty, in order to gain the favor of Empress Dowager Cixi, Yuan Shikai imported a car manufactured by Durkheim Automobile Company (made in about 1896) from Germany in 1902 to Cixi. This is the first car ever to appear in our country. The car body is open in wood, with a canopy double row seat, four horsepower, shape retains the traces of the 18th century European carriage. After the matter was known by the Minister of the Interior, he regarded the car as a “evil thing” and even more afraid of Empress Dowager sitting in the “evil”. So he wrote one after another: “In vain China since the Yao and Shun dynasties, By the respect of, care for his wind power of the car ... ... ”. Empress not listen, partial to car entertainment. The driver’s position offended her dignity before her. She ordered the driver kneeling and driving, because it is impossible to drive, had abandoned it, as the palace of waste. The car is now preserved as a historical monument in the Summer Palace.
