新清史强调康熙帝巡游五台山接续元朝传统的看法可以商榷。元明以来,五台山成为藏传佛教的圣地,在清代,五台山最重要的庙宇菩萨顶改为喇嘛庙,以其为首形成了黄庙体系。康熙帝五次巡游五台山,进香礼佛,以绥服信仰喇嘛教之蒙古,意在调适满、蒙、藏、汉四者的关系。此外,清帝与五台山的联系点,在于清帝被藏传佛教认定为文殊菩萨的化身,意味着正式承认清帝对中国的统治,而五台山则是文殊菩萨的道场。康熙帝五台山礼佛,不仅是为民祈福,而且是为太皇太后、皇太后祈寿,为本人祈求福佑。康熙帝巡游五台山御书寺额、碑文、诗歌以及支持续修山志也是再造圣山。建构满汉蒙藏多元一体国家形态是康熙帝巡游五台山的追求。
