从上世纪至今,有关海南的书籍,断断续续出版过一些。然而,这些书籍,或失之零碎,或失之局限,或失之作者的主观……一直以来都缺乏一部比较系统、客观而又全面地讲述海南历史的书籍。而2002年林日举教授编写的《海南史》,从海南原始社会一直讲到海南解放,在很大程度弥补了上述的不足,这是首先值得肯定的一点。纵览《海南史》,觉其所具有的明显特色和优势在如下四个方面:一是编写历史的系统性。过去所看到过的一些有关海南历史的书籍,总觉得其内容比较单薄,不够系统。而这部《海南史》则不然,它从海南的原始社会 Since the last century, books about Hainan have been published on and off.
