Science fiction again predicts scientific facts. Remember the movie hero using a small laser beam to destroy the rockets in the sky? In December 2001, the general performance of science fiction scenes took a step closer to reality. At the White Sands Ballistic Missile Range, New Mexico, 1 cm diameter holes were fired on a 2 cm thick steel sample stack with a Solid State Heat Capacity Laser (SSHCL) in 6 s. The current comes from the wall output and costs only 30 cents. When large chemical lasers successfully shoot down tactical rockets, this laser design supports the weight and size needs of future mobile devices.
