台阁现象是牡丹、芍药品种演化进程中一个质的飞跃,是品种演化的新途径。作者依据台阁花雌雄蕊的瓣化程度,将台阁品种的演化过程分为4个阶段:即“初生期”、“彩瓣期”、“分层期”和“球花期”。根据上述各演化阶段,将台阁品种划分为4个花型:即“初生台阁型”、“彩瓣台阁型”、“分层台阁型”和“球花台阁型”。确定台阁品种的花型,以下方花所处的演化阶段为标准。文中还介绍了台阁品种的鉴定方法。
